The Unpublished Post

Well, I stayed up late and finished the post on Thursday night so that it would be ready firts thing Friday morning. What a good thought - or at least it would have been if I had actually posted it. I was so pleased with myself for getting it done early, I forgot to hit the POST button! Sorry, Sorry! But here it is now and still beautiful.

The challenge this week was to use the sketch challenge over at 52 Sketches/52 Weeks! We love their sketches and plan to use them more frequently in our new blog schedule! If you decide to play along, please feel free to adapt this sketch to any size you like to work with.

This weeks challenge is to use a variety of media types on your card or page.

Cathy Weider - The Seaside Rose Cottage
has created two beautiful samples.
"Go Confidently" was created with Coordinations card stock, Hanko Washi paper and the Dogwood stamp form Serendipity.

"Just When" features a lovely butterfly image washed with watercolor iridescent medium which makes it shimmer. The tiny butterflies have a liquid pearl center (White Opal) and the paper is from Imaginisce.

Blog Roll Day 2 - Special Pages for Moms...

I grew up in a family with lots of mothers. I had my mom, my grandmothers and my great-grandmothers. We all lived near each other and usually celebrated Mother's Day with a large family get together. It wasn't until I began scrapbooking that I realized how much I had learned and benefited from having so many "mothers" in my life.

The hardest thing for me to do when papercrafting is to find the right words to add to my project. I have pictures and tons of paper to go with them, but what should I say? I thought it might be helpful to have a collection of Mother's Day ideas close at hand, so here is a link to a free special download we have added to our webstore. There are two pages of clippable quotes that you can use as title ideas, journaling prompts, or card sentiments - we hope you enjoy them!

Traditions Central!! Our Very First Blog Roll!

Wahoo! We are SO excited to share in our FIRST ever blog roll with you! We are so blessed to have a wonderfully talented design team, and we couldn't think of anything better to do for Mother's Day then to turn our spotlight on them and let them WOW you with their talent!

Here's how it's going to work: beginning today and continuing each day until May 10th one of our designers will host a challenge or special topic on their blog, and some of the other designers will be posting samples and their own thoughts about the challenge. We hope you will visit their blogs and play along - if you do there will be chances to win prizes each day!! You can check in here each day to find out who's hosting what...

The theme of the challenge is Mothers and Daughters Traditions and we will offer up a bouquet of fabulous projects - cards, scrapbook designs, gift and packaging ideas, altered projects, recipes, plus fun facts and quizzes. We're gonna have a lot of fun together

Our FIRST challenge will be hosted by Cathy Weider at her Seaside Rose Cottage. Cathy has GORGEOUS gardens and the flowers in her garden are composed of many layers of petals... hmm, layers... there it is, our first challenge! You need to create a card with a lot of layering!

In the spirit of Mothers and Daughters traditions, we wanted to share a little of our history and how the Mothers and Daughters scrapbooking store came to be! Here's what mom had to say about us:

Mothers and Daughters Creations started many years before the present day Scrapbooking Store you see on-line. Both of my grandmothers were very talented women. My paternal grandmother taught me to sew. Her sewing was amazing - not only did she create clothes for people, she also designed her own draperies and home decor items. I have a tendancy to lean toward the home decor items, although have been known to create a shirt or pair of pajamas on occasion. My maternal grandmother taught me to crochet. She spent hours in the winter months teaching me the intracies of creating even stitches of just the right tightness. All this hard work paid off a few years ago when I crocheted my granddaughters christening dress. My own mother is also a wonderful seamstress as well as an avid crafter and beautiful painter.

In years past, my daughter (Tamara), my mother (Louise) and myself (Linda) have participated in many joint ventures with a variety of crafting venues. There are many happy memories of the three of us working together to create items to do a special craft show or display for a local store.

More recently Tamara got involved with scrapbooking through Stampin' Up and a local scrapbook store. Her special talent for color combinations and design made her a very popular teacher and kit designer in the local market. After the birth of her second child and making a move to the country, it became more difficult to keep up with the local (now 40 miles away) store, and Tamara wanted to try to earn income at home to stay home with her children . . . so came the beginnings of the idea for Mothers and Daughters Creations.

We opened MDC for business in November of 2007. We started with a couple of kits and a few hand selected products. We have selected products based on our feel for the product rather than the popularity - we have a very unique selection which we are happy to present to you in our store. This weekend we'll be running some special sales in honor of National Scrapbooking Day, so we hope you'll take a little time to shop as well as enjoying the challenges on our blog roll. We want to thank all of you for stopping in and we are so excited to see your creations! Let the first annual MDC Blog Roll begin!!

MDCATC2 - Spring Themed ATC's

Hello, Everyone! Continuing the new challenge series we started last month, we invite you to play along with our newest ATC challenge. This month, we are looking for ATC’s featuring spring, Passover, or Easter themes.

If you’ve never made an ATC before, here are links to two tutorials on Cathy's blog that will help answer any questions you have. You can post any other questions you have here or there.

The rules are simple: Create a 2.5 inch by 3.5 inch ATC with a spring, Passover, or Easter theme. It’s okay to stretch your imagination and any and all media and techniques can be used. However, the card must include stamping somewhere on the front of the card and the stamping needs to be in the form of an image – not just a sentiment. It can be the primary image or part of the background, like flourishes or a fancy background stamp. Aside from that, anything goes. No vendor or color requirements.

Here are some beautiful sample cards Cathy made using Kaiser paper and stamps from the Imaginisce and Daisy Bucket lines. One of the earliest signs of spring is the new green growth on all of the shrubs and trees. Love it, and this paper from Kaiser too!

I also took a minute to make a very simple sample for this challenge using the new Bridgeport papers from sei and the calendar stamp from Imaginisce. My card celebrates the first day of spring this year - we don't really have a 'spring' here in South Florida since it never really gets that cold, so I missed it this year!

Want to play along? All you need to do to enter is upload your card to any gallery or to a blog and post a comment here with a link to your card so we can all see it. Wow, I can't believe we're already in to April! Another year just flying by with me running after it trying to catch up! I'm sure you guys with heavy winters are anxiously looking forward to a relief from the cold soon.... I am NOT looking forward to my first summer in Florida - I imagine it will be very hot, although mom has always said it's actually hotter in Virginia. We'll just see about that!

The Traveling DSL . . .

My apologies to everyone who is used to seeing our blogs regularly!

It would seem that our neighborhood is about to get NEW fiberoptic phone, tv and internet. Unfortunately, in the process the contractors have destroyed our services. We have been without phone and internet for almost two weeks! On occasion we would get something (never everything) for a few minutes here and there, and they did send me 6 or 7 technicians that were all very nice . . . Finally on Friday evening the last of the techs phoned to tell me he had found the trouble and fixed it! After much rejoicing, we woke up Saturday morning with - no DSL!!!

Today seems to be starting off well, and I am going to try to get all the challenge photos rolling - cross your fingers - I hope to be back soon!

Today we have another fun product challenge -- Paintables cardstock paper by Prima! This is beautiful 12x12 white cardstock paper in a weight similar to watercolor paper that has preprinted designs. You can use markers, pencil, watercolors, inks - it's pretty much whatever you'd like! You've got to check it out at the store - and, this week it's on sale! We were dying to know what our designers would come up with, s0 we thought a challenge was definitely in order! One of our lucky players will win a 12x12 sheet of Paintables cardstock this week:

MDCC32 - Card Thursdays - More ATC's and Lace!

Hello and welcome to today's MDC Challenge! This week we're continuing on with two favorite themes we've introduced recently. First of all, last week we introduced a Valentine's ATC challenge - and the design team had extra fun doing our own ATC exchange! We had so much fun we decided to extend our challenge! We DO have one winner so far - one of our favorite players, Carla! Here's Carla's Valentine ATC:

Each box contains an assortment of MDC papers cut to size, a scrap bag to add color and decorative trims to your cards, a sampling of May Arts ribbon and buttons from Basic Grey's sugared collection, some of Cathy's handmade flowers and embellishments, and two stamps from the Daisy Bucket and Imaginisce lines.

Carla wins the first one, which also includes some handmade and signed ATC's from Cathy!! So, that still leaves another prize package left and the obvious solution is to extend our challenge another week! There will be a little change - since it is now well past Valentine's day, your ATC can be any theme... BUT, it can't be a co-challenge with our second challenge (which will be posted below...) Cathy gave us an excellent tutorial last week so if you need a little help please visit her blog for more information. The main thing to remember is that your card needs to be 2.5" x 3.5". MDCC31 - Card Thursdays - Beautiful Things Come in Small Packages...

Last week we challenged our players to create the ultimate paper pierced card. Paper piercing is a favorite and very versatile technique - it can be used a little or a lot, as an accent or as a focal point. Everyone submitted fabulous examples and we so enjoyed everyone's creativity! We were especially awed by the beautiful card submitted by our winner, Irene:

This week one of our designers, Cathy Wieder, came up with a very exciting little challenge to share with everyone (hint! hint!) This week we're going to do ATC's!! Here's what Cathy had to say about them:

Beautiful Things Come in Small Packages! Artist Trading Cards, or ATC's, are miniature works of art made in the same way that "regular" greeting cards and scrapbook pages are made. We love making ATC's because they need not have a purpose, a greeting, or sentiment; they are art for art's sake. They are also a great way to use up small scraps of paper that are just to pretty to throw out.

Three rules apply to ATC's: First, dimensions of an ATC are always 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, which is the standard size for all trading cards, from baseball to YuGiOh. It doesn't matter whether the card is oriented in the portrait or landscape position, but the actual dimensions are not negotiable and you must adhere strictly to that size. Embellishments need to be relatively thin as these cards are often slid into plastic card sleeves to protect and store them.

Secondly, no matter what techniques or media are used to make them, ATC's are considered true works of art and are signed, dated and numbered by the artist just like any other valuable collectible.

Lastly, by definition, Artist Trading Cards are never sold. Unlike other trading cards, where the lines have blurred and they are commonly bought and sold by collectors, Artist Trading Cards may only be traded or given away. This makes them even more coveted because you simply can't buy one created by your favorite card artist. And since they are not mass-produced, acquiring one from an artist you admire is exciting.

ATC's have many uses as a collectible treasure. They can be stored or displayed in card albums or other decorative holders, mounted in a frame or shadow box and framed as an art display, or used to embellish cards and scrap book pages. They can be given as a gift of art to become a treasured place marker in a book, bible, or cookbook, or as miniature cards or gift tags for any holiday or occasion.

The small size of the Imaginisce and Daisy Bucket stamps are perfect for making ATC's, but even larger stamps can be used in creative ways to embellish an ATC. This week, we challenge you to make a Valentine card to share with your significant other, child, relative, or friend. As always, post a picture of it on your blog or in a gallery and then leave us a comment with a link to your creation.

To celebrate this special challenge we'll be choosing TWO winners this week! We will pick one humorous Valentine and one traditional Valentine from the submissions... the winners will each receive an ATC prize pack!

We've got some beautiful new paper in at the store - the Lovebird collection from sei. It features double sided, cardstock weight patterned papers that are accented with shimmer, glitter, and foil - it's just so lovely IRL!! MDCSB13 - Scrapbook Monday - New and Improved!

Hello scrapbookers, and welcome to 2009! It seems unreal how fast the years fly by these days - part of it is that all of January is spent recovering from the holidays, I think :)

To start the new year off right, we thought this week would be a great week to showcase things that are new and improved, or things that will be new and improved in the coming year!

At MDC, we plan to make a lot of positive changes! We'll be continuing with our customer appreciation program so that all our repeat customers will start reaping some reward for their loyalty!! We're also bringing in new lines and expanding selections we already have. We'll be bringing back our popular kits, so that one stop shopping and scrapping will be a little easier, and hope to add some on-line classes and tutorials! We can't wait to get started on our new projects!

What else is new and improved? We just got word that Julie Bonner over at 52 weeks 52 sketches has started a brand new community board for her site - you definitely have to check it out! We've really enjoyed using her sketches in the past and can't wait to see what she'll bring to us this year!

I know that personally I have SO many things to improve on, it would be hard to choose just one for a layout - lol!!! I know a biggie for me, though... time management! I hope to bring you a layout on that later in the week.... hehehe....

I'm sure many of us are struggling to pull the last minute details together for the holidays, so for today's challenge we're going to start to Wrap It Up!! Cover chipboard with paper, use bows to decorate, add ribbons and tags... however you do it, we'd love to see it!

Hello everyone, my name is Jennifer. I live in beautiful Florida with my wonderful husband and three kids, Demetrius 17, Jaiden 4 and Jacob 2 1/2.

I was so excited to be asked to be a guest designer for "Mothers and Daughters Creations" this month. Since I found the site back in October I've been playing along with the challenges when I get the chance. It's very cool to be part of the team for a day - Thanks for having me guys!!!

I have been paper crafting for about four years, and love all aspects of it, from scrapbooking and card making, to altering any and everything. I also love to draw and often get to use my designs in my cards and layouts. Well, I didn't make it at 7 either! But I'm finally here to get our scrapbook challenge for the week up! I ended up buying a whole new computer, with a new operating system and a new virus program and a new office program, all of which I am sure are perfectly lovely but none of which I know how to work!! MDCC20 - Same Product Many Ways OR a Color Challenge!

Hello, welcome to our Thursday cardmaking challenge! I'd like to take a minute to thank everyone who played last week's table decor challenge; I wasn't sure how many takers we'd have because some people are a little intimidated to move off the 'cardbase', but you all really pulled through and sent us some awesome entries! Check out this sample from this week's winner, Andrea:

This week I decided to do something a little different and fun for our design team - I sent them a "surprise" package with special products to use just for this challenge! The idea is to see what kind of different ideas everyone can come up with given the same materials to work with. I did allow them to use up the three colors of cardstock in addition to what we sent. Here was our surprise package:

Each person received two sheets of double sided pattern paper and two silk glittered snowflakes from My Little Yellow Bicycle's Christmas Magic collection, along with a bottle of white opal Liquid Pearls and a gingerbread man stamp from Imaginisce.

Now, you may be wondering how you can play along with us - well, you still can! For everyone who wants to play along with will be a color challenge - for those who use SU colors they would be Always Artichoke, Sage Shadow, and Riding Hood Red; for those who don't, think light green, dark green, and red! Bonus points for finding a gingerbread man to use on your page!! Look at the beautiful samples our design team made:
